Chapter 13
Gabriel
"Damn it!"
I mutter, throwing the papers in front of me into the fireplace and fall into the chair behind me, watching as the orange flames of the fire lick at the documents that hold the evidence of who Danica really is.
Confusion and anger battle within me; this didn't make sense.
I had felt her die. I had begged my father to bring her back, falling onto my knees, and begging for her life. But it hadn't been enough.
The first time I had seen the small, purple-eyed girl, she had been in one of my father's testing rooms. She almost died that first night, but when I had run into that room trying to get my father to stop whatever he was doing to make her scream, my magic exploded from me in a way it had never done before. For the first time since my Fae form had come into existence, my magic didn't take a life⦠it saved one.
I could feel her soul leaving her tiny body. That god-awful link that tethered me to the dead would always haunt me. And the sheer terror I felt knowing that this small girl that I had only laid eyes on minutes ago would never be in my life scared me beyond measure. My magic latched onto her soul, marking her as ours, and forced it back into her mortal body. It was the first time that I didn't feel like a monster, the first time I didn't feel like a murderer. The only time I felt⦠human.
It had taken every ounce of magic my fourteen-year-old body held to save her, and I blacked out. When I woke up three days later, it was to my father's excited face and my foster brothers tied down on similar tables that the girl had been strapped to. Their screams from that day still cause me to wake up in a cold sweat in the dark of night. The only comfort I had was that I had this new bond to that girl; I could feel her when my magic wrapped around the new magic inside of me, linking us together.
My father had let me see her a few more times after that. He let me grow close to her, form a friendship with the pretty, purple-eyed girl. She became my sister, as close to me, if not more so than my brothers. I knew the only reason my father let me see her again, was because he wanted to see if my magic would do anything with her nearby like it had the first time. But it didn't matter to me. I lived for those short visits when they would drag her to my room, and I would talk to her for hours.
She was always spelled and completely under Dante's control. I would ask her questions, but she couldn't answer. She never uttered a word. But her smiles and soft expressions saved my sanity in that god-forsaken place.
I ended up calling her Violet after her pretty eyes.
